Drawn to ‘legendary cities’, Chantal Stoman shot a series of photographs of Rome as part of her residency at the Villa Médicis. Her beautifully poetic work moved us deeply, especially regarding the place of imagery in the Catholic faith. As a subject, Chantal has been exploring the city for the past few years and is drawn each time to its history, architecture and the place of people within that architecture. When we met her at the Hôtel de Sauroy during the awards ceremony for the Prix Virginia that we partner, Chantal was working on a new project on Jerusalem, Walking Distance. Her work on the city is very beautiful, very fair; each image invites further visual wandering into a city that is rich with the history of 3,000 years.
